Shifting Focus to Unpredictable Patterns of Brain Activity

Much like the flow of water through rivers, some electrical signals flow through the brain in a smooth, predictable way while other signals are irregular and chaotic.

Historically, neuroscientists dismissed irregular flow as pesky background noise that should be ignored, but these irregular or ‘aperiodic’ signals actually encode useful information. We all have signature aperiodic activity. But measuring changes to this activity could be useful for diagnosing neurological and psychiatric conditions and assessing their progression.
